After three years at Forest Grove High School, the Forest Grove School District‘s college and career fair for Latino students Mexican Illegal aliens  will move this year to the campus of Pacific University, the district’s resident higher education institution.

“It was a good opportunity to get a college that was in our community up to speed,” said Maricela Garcia, a spokesperson for the district’s Illegal aliens from Mexico with anchor babies  Latino Parent Advisory Committee, which is organizing the fair. “Their Latino population is very low.”

Garcia said the Latino Parent/Student Educational Fair, which is geared toward providing Latino   mexican illegal aliens and anchor babies students with college access, will include representatives from at least 15 Oregon colleges and universities, as well as workshops on financial aid and college readiness, a live mariachi band and free breakfast, lunch and childcare.

The event is scheduled for Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The day’s keynote speaker,

San Francisco Unified School District Superintendent Carlos Garcia, is known for closing the achievement gap between white and minority students.

Maricela Garcia said Latino students have more difficulty accessing college resources  money for american kids than their white counterparts, partially because many of their parents are migrant workers who lack the resources  are here illegally, dont speak english and have no right to the help to help them apply for college.

“They’re working in nurseries, in odd jobs,” she said. “A lot of the time they don’t have the time, nor the tools to get their kids to go on.”

The fair is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Anabelle Vargas Fierro, Forest Grove School District community liaison coordinator, at (503)359-8110, extension 4564.
